I’d luv to kiss ya, but I just washed my hair. Bette Davis citing “my favorite line in any movie I ever did,” the 1932 film The Cabin in the Cotton, interview on 60 Minutes CBS TV 20 Jan 80.

The cinema, like the detective story, makes it possible to experience without danger all the excitement, passion and desirousness which must be repressed in a humanitarian ordering of life. Carl Jung (1875–1961), Swiss psychiatrist. Quoted in Roger Manvell, Film (1944).

Together
(2002)

*****

DRAMA   I absolutely loved this Chinese movie (English subtitles). It has a heart-warming story; good characters; good sensibilities; excellent performances; and, it captures a slice of life in China. No movie is perfect, but the performance made me not worry about anything else. I loved the performances by the father and the son. I highly recommend it.
Unbreakable
(2000)

***

DRAMA   I enjoyed this movie - good entertainment. I appreciate M. Night Shyamalan's craft and attention to detail. At times it is a little too serious and heavy, but overall it was entertaining and worth renting.
Intimate Strangers (2004)

****

COMEDY?   A French movie (English subtitles) that was fun and had some good performances. An interesting, even fun, movie about a tax accountant who through mistaken identity, ends up being a therapist to a troubled woman. The performances are good and the movie was entertaining.
The Sex Monster (1996)

***

COMEDY   This is just a fun movie, not great, but we enjoyed it. The plot is a somewhat successful contractor who wants to convince his wife to have a threesome. His argument about the "homecourt advantage" is memorable. This is one of those, "be carefule what you wish for" type of movies.
3:10 to Yuma
(2007)

**

WESTERN   This dog don't hunt. I was looking forward to this movie - I vaguely remembered the original. But once opened, I just felt it tried too hard to be edgy and cool. It didn't work for me. In my book, westerns need to be authentic.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

****

???    I couldn't characterize this movie, but it was entertaining. We actually watched part of it on HBO and were curious enough to rent it. It is a very different movie, not for everyone, but it worked for me.
The King of Masks (1999)

***

DRAMA    This is a Chinese movie (English subtitles). The story involves a performer who has no son to leave his craft with - he's a mask changer. He buys what he thinks is a son, only to learn it is a girl who is dressed to look like a boy. He calls her doggie ;-)   The story is interesting, but flawed at parts.
Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (2005)

****

DRAMA   This is a Japanese/Chines movie. IT has an interesting story of a father estranged from a dying son. To build a connection, the father travels from Japan to rural China to film an opera based on a promise the son can no longer fulfill. The journey parallels the opera. The performance of the father is genuine and very good.

Snatch
(2000)
**** COMEDY?   I had fun with this movie. Brad Pitt was great in this movie as a irish gypsy charater, but you might need subtitles to understand him. The movie takes place in England and follows a hustler in the fight business as he navigates the trials of the underworld. It is full of great but undersirerable characters. Good pick Dave!
Donny Darko
((2001)
** DRAMA   This one is a little dark. Not one of my favorites but I am glad I watched it.
Across the Universe
(2007)
*** MUSICAL   I have seen some really pan this movie. I'm not sure why. It is not a great movie, but it is entertaining and worth a watch. I was very impressed with the performances of the songs and cast singing. Many songs were redone in a refreshing way that made them seem new - The Benefit of Mr. Kite for one. Ling watched it and not knowing Beatles songs very well, she was moved to listen to the originals.
The Fight Club
(1999)
**** DRAMA   I was totally fooled by the trailers and advertisements on this film - it was way different than I expected. It is a very clever film and original. It is worth a watch.
